What is Sea Cadets?

The Cadet Program is a national program for young Canadians (ages 12 to 18) which includes The Royal Canadian Sea Cadets, The Royal Canadian Army Cadets, and The Royal Canadian Air Cadets.

Sea Cadets offers weekly activities, weekend activities, summer training, staff cadet experience, competitions, qualifications, volunteer community service hours and secondary school co-op credits.

What do Sea Cadets DO?

Sea Cadets develop skills through fun, challenging activities like seamanship, sailing and nautical training while building leadership skills, teamwork, and self-confidence.

As a Sea Cadet, you can:

  • Go Sailing 1-2 times each year and also have the opportunity to sail during summer training and achieve CanSail qualifications.
  • Attain a Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate (PCOC), as well as a VHF Radio Operator’s Certificate (ROC)
  • Learn knots that are useful for sailing, boating and and camping. Learn chartwork and navigating skills for boating.
  • Have opportunities for advanced training on Canadian Navy ships and Canadian Coast Guard ships to learn about many of the duties and responsibilities while on board.
  • Earn high school community service hours participating in parades, ceremonial events and citizenship activities connected to our local and Canadian Naval Heritage.
  • Earn high school credits through the Cadet Co-Op.  Speak to your guidance counsellor and our staff for more details on how to apply.

When do Sea Cadets Meet?

RCSCC COURAGEOUS meets for training Tuesday evenings from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  A variety of topics and skills are covered through 30-minute training sessions and activities.

We also meet on Sundays (as scheduled) from 12:30 to 4:30 PM for additional activities (recreational sports, marksmanship practice etc.) and for cadet uniform issues or exchanges.

Several Training Days (on weekends) are scheduled between September to June for activities including sailing, nautical training, recreational sports, marksmanship, and biathlon.

RCSCC COURAGEOUS History

In 1919 London was home to one of 11 Boys’ Naval Brigades in Ontario.  The Navy League of Canada partnered with the Royal Canadian Navy to provide maritime training and the name changed to Navy League Sea Cadets in 1923.  In 1942, King George VI granted that the name be changed to Royal Canadian Sea Cadets.  London is home to the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps COURAGEOUS.  Our Corps name and unique five-sided crest with a hand gripping a snake, originate from HMS COURAGEOUS, a British Aircraft Carrier (converted from a Battle Cruiser) and the first Royal Navy ship lost in World War II.
